Treating Sports Injuries

When faced with a sports injury, the first thing you should do is seek medical attention from a doctor, preferably one experienced in sports injuries and orthopaedics. The doctor will be able to assess your injury thoroughly and recommend a comprehensive and targeted treatment plan for you.

Remember, the earlier you seek treatment, the better the outcomes will be; as opposed to letting the condition deteriorate before seeking professional help.

Diagnosis

Doctor reviewing patient’s medical history for injury diagnosis
1
The doctor will first gather information about your medical history and the circumstances surrounding your injury.
Doctor performing a physical examination to assess strength, range of motion, and pain
2
Then, a physical examination of the injured area will be carried out. This will test for strength, range of motion, as well as areas of pain and so on.
Imaging tests performed to confirm injury diagnosis
3
Imaging tests such as X-rays, MRIs and CT scans may also be used to take a better look at the injury and confirm the diagnosis.

Non-Surgical Treatment

In milder cases of sports injuries, non-surgical treatments may be recommended. These treatments include:

Rest

Ice

Physiotherapy

Medication

Injections

Bracing or splinting

Sports Surgery Treatment

If the injury does not heal despite conservative treatment, or was serious right from the start, surgery may be needed. Your sports orthopaedic surgeon may perform any of the following:

Arthroscopic Surgery

Fracture Repair Surgery

Tendon Repair Surgery

Rotator Cuff Repair Surgery

ACL Reconstruction Surgery

Joint Replacement Surgery
